Energy sector photography documenting transformer refurbishment and asset-life extension within a 132kV electrical substation.
The project focused on the completed retrofit of transformer infrastructure at Hamworthy Substation in Poole.
BTRAC, part of the REINHAUSEN Group, worked with Winder Power Transformer Services to refurbish and modernise existing transformer equipment rather than replace the asset. The intervention reduced project costs to approximately 20% of replacement value while adding more than a decade of expected service life.
Halcyon was commissioned to build a structured image library around the completed work — connecting the wider substation, refurbished transformers, individual components and engineering teams within one coherent visual record.
The assignment followed previous commissioned photography for Reinhausen and BTRAC, extending an established visual relationship into live energy infrastructure.

Approach & Operational Reality
The purpose of the photography was not simply to show a completed transformer.
The value of the project sat in the intervention itself: existing electrical infrastructure had been retained, refurbished and returned with an extended operational life. The photography therefore needed to make the engineering work legible while keeping it connected to the wider energy system.
Coverage moved from overall views of the substation and its relationship with the surrounding grid to complete transformer assemblies, individual retrofit components and technical detail.
Earlier condition photography provided a visual reference. Where access permitted, key equipment was photographed from corresponding viewpoints, allowing the completed retrofit to be compared directly with its previous condition without reducing the coverage to conventional before-and-after documentation.
Movement inside the substation was restricted to designated areas. Viewpoints, equipment and working position were adapted around those controls while still establishing scale, infrastructure and the relationship between the refurbished transformers, busbars, overhead lines and surrounding plant.
Portraits, final checks and working interaction added the people responsible for the project, connecting the physical result with the engineering expertise behind it.

The completed image library provides both a detailed record of the retrofit and a broader visual account of extending the useful life of existing energy infrastructure.

The project also continues an established relationship with Reinhausen. Earlier commissioned photography is used within the Group’s content examining transformer lifecycle, retrofit and the optimisation of existing grid infrastructure.
